If you want to see the rainbow, you have to go through the R.A.I.N.
“The meaning of life is to give life a meaning.”
Viktor E. Frankel
“I forgot my umbrella again. Damn it! I hate it when it rains.” This sentence is one of my favorite sentences when complaining about the weather.
I have another favorite one: ”You know, when I was living in Dakar, Senegal, I never had to worry about weather. It rains only during the summer.”
Yet, I left Senegal to come to France to pursue my engineering studies.
Yes, France has 4 seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
And it will rain randomly, all year long. It is cold, like hell.
Yet this is where I have been able to have the freedom to build my self-mastery.
I was given a clean clay to build the version of myself that I have been dreaming about.
Why is it that we love to hate rain?
Why do we all want the rainbow and expect it to come from thin air?
We will get to the R.A.I.N that brings rainbow into our life.
First, let’s explore five things that we all do. But, unfortunately, those things are counter-productive to a meaningful journey of self-discovery and self-mastery.
- We love your comfort zone.
- We crave things out of our control.
- We lock ourselves up in our minds.
- We flee the present and hide in the past or the future.
- We enter the infinite doom loop: “what if…”
WE LOVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE — Many of us will live and die in our comfort zone. We will do things we know how to do. We will never challenge ourselves to discover new things.
“Métro, Boulot, Dodo!” is a French expression coining that life: we are stuck in our 9 to 5 job. We wait for the weekend, for the holidays, and for retirement to enjoy our life.
WE CRAVE THINGS OUT OF OUR CONTROL — If our mood is tired of the weather, we are doomed to absolute and eternal disappointment.
The weather, most of the things, and people in our life are out of our control. Yet, we are addicted to complaining about things that are out of our control.
We do it deliberately, not immediately but surely, day in, day out. We always find reasons why we cannot do things. We met our body down to the weight of gravity and junk food.
WE FLEE THE PRESENT AND HIDE IN THE PAST OR THE FUTURE — We all are living in the present. Yet, most of us are either mentally dwelling on the past or stressing about the future.
Our mind is like that monkey in the Amazon forest: jumping from tree to tree from sunrise to sunset. Stuck in the forest but not taking the time to reap any fruit and enjoy it.
WE ENTER THE INFINITE DOOM LOOP: “WHAT IF…” — We as human beings, are flexible and have the world to discover.
Yet we leave like statues, paralyzed by the “what if it goes wrong” mind that seals us on the birth ground that might become our deathbed.
The five obstacles above are from our creation. We use them as stones and try to build a giant concrete bunker around us.
Yet where there is no rain, there is no water. Where there is no water, there is no life. All things are left to dry to death.
We need to bring rain to our lives. We need that water to go through those rocks. And slowly but surely, we need to let that rain carve a way through them like the Grand Canyon with the Colorado river.
R.A.I.N is a four steps method that will help you get to the rainbow:
- R as Recognize
- A as Accept
- I as Investigate
- N as Non-Identify
Are you ready to welcome rain in your life again?
1. Recognize in what state of mind you are — In each situation, like when you are lost, hit the “find my state” button in the map of your mind.
2. Accept to allow what you cannot control — Life just happens. Not for you or against you. Most things in life are out of your control. Just accept and move on.
3. Investigate your emotional and mental state — Ask “why” you are in the state of mind you are. Use the Five whys method to identify potential root causes.
4. Non-Identify to take the helicopter view: You are not the body, you are not the mind, and you are not my emotions. You are the helicopter flying above all those landscapes.
Now you have it: the magic spell to bring rain into your life.
The next time the sky is dark, embrace the rain that comes with it. This is the way to the rainbow life.
Are you expecting a rainbow without rain?
Are you removing the obstacles to self-discovery?
Are you making it rain?
