R2-D2 has been the companion of Luke Skywalker: make it yours to put things into perspective in your life.
“Hell is to meet the person you could have been at death and realize you’re not even a shadow of that person.
Heaven is to meet the person you could have been and to see yourself staring back at you.“
Fear has been driving and paralyzing me most of my life.
There are a lot of definitions of fear.
My favorite is this one: False Evidence Appearing Real.
Before coming to France, I was crippled by fear of failing here and going back empty-handed to Senegal.
Before getting married to a non-muslim woman, I feared being outcasted by my community and my family.
Before speaking up at work, I was always afraid that it would affect my career.
Here I am today. All those fears were just some hypothetical possibilities of a potential event that might happen. Yet, the universe is full of opportunities beyond our imagination.
What has helped me in the journey is my faith.
There are a lot of definitions of faith.
My favorite is this one: Finding Answer In The Heart.
I was gifted with memory above the average compared to some people around me when I was young.
Memorizing some parts of the Quran, quickly digesting my lessons at school made me feel like I did not need to work hard.
My parents were proud of my marks at school, and I was a good young Muslim boy who could repeat some verses of the Quran while not understanding the deep meaning.
Until late in my studies, in Engineering school, in France, I once had the lowest mark because I did not prepare for my exam.
In my professional career or private life, I was more of the guy with the fixed mindset and not the one with the growth one.
I enjoyed sitting on my laurels and hoping to skyrocket in every area of my life.
While “talent” can be a small leg start, nothing can beat continuous improvement and a life of learning.
“R2-D2 (/ˌɑːr.tuːˈdiːtuː/) or Artoo-Detoo is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas. He has appeared in eleven of the twelve Star Wars films to date. At various points throughout the course of the films, R2, an astromech droid, is a friend to C-3PO, Padmé Amidala, Anakin Skywalker, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, BB-8, Rey and D-O.”
We all need an R2-D2 like a companion as we are flying through the galaxy of our life. As we are facing challenges day in, day out, R2-D2 keeps us focused, providing us with the information we need and reminding us what matters.
This is the R2-D2 that we have to lock in our flagship:
- R2: Repercussion or Regret
- D2: Die or Develop
1. R2: REPERCUSSION OR REGRET — Most of us are crippled by fear or other people’s opinions.
When facing a challenge in life, we ask the wrong question: “Why me?”
We should be saying: “Try me.”
We spend hundreds of hours worrying about the potential repercussions of conquering our fears.
That false evidence will trap us in our comfort zone.
The most painful feeling in life is the taste of regret as we are on our deathbed.
Here are the Top 5 things people regret before they die:
- “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.”
- “I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.”
- “I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.”
- “I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.”
- “I wish that I had let myself be happier.”
R in R2-D2 is the Reminder of the power of regret over repercussion.
The cemetery is already packed with CEOs, entrepreneurs who could have solved world hunger, people who just existed and never really lived.
We have to make sure that we are not burying our potentials with us. Because they will come asking why we let them down.
2. D2: DIE OR DEVELOP — At the end of each day of our life, we are in one of these 3 states as compared to the day before:
- Stay even,
- Be worse,
- Get better.
Being worse does not require that much effort. You just have to let entropy work for you.
Staying even as the day before and getting better requires a lot of effort from us.
Change being the only constant in life, we have to adapt and develop to face uncertainties.
Staying in our comfort zones, having a fixed mindset will make us a sclerosis being.
And as statues, no matter how much water the universe pours into us, it will only trickle down to the ground and evaporate.
It feels like pouring water into the desert.
We will go nowhere. Then one day, an unstoppable force will come to wipe us. Contrary to the saying, we are not unmovable objects.
We are quite the contrary: we are like a candle in the wind.
D in R2-D2 is the Desire to develop over dying.
Yes, we will all die eventually. Yet some of us die internally at age 25 and just exist like a Walking Dead character from the eponymous TV series.
Like all beings on Earth, we have to develop a growth mindset. We have to accept that all we know is nothing, like Jon Snow.
We need to embark on a life journey of learning to meet the person we can be staring back at us on our deathbed.
There you have it. R2-D2 (Repercussion or Regret, Die or Develop) is a must-have companion to invite in your life’s journey.
He will make sure to be the companion we need, the companion we deserve, and the companion we want.
How do you conquer your fears?
Are you dying or developing daily?
Are you leaving some regrets behind you?
