Thank you Mwangi for this article.

It revived some memories within me. I grew up with Hip Hop in the 90ties.
Yes from the last century 😅

In Senegal 🇸🇳, West Africa, we were idolizing also American rap music.

We had also some great local artists like Positive Black Soul and Daara Ji.

Ghetto music is the embodiment of those from the projects reclaiming the narrative about their experience.

I am living in France 🇫🇷. Most of the ghetto music comes from the projects called "Banlieue" which is rooted in "Lieu" + "Banissement" which translates as exclusion area.

Indeed in the 19th century, they decided to exclude all the "poor" people in the skirts of Paris.

Then after the end of colonisation in the 60ties in Africa, some Africans migrated to Europe.

People from the ghettos have been silenced by design, systemic architectural exclusion.

Through music, we are writing our own stories and letting the world know.

🙏🏾 💯 🤎
