When it comes to physics, there are 4 forces; when it comes to humanity, there is a 5th force. That force is stronger than the 4 others combined. Master it, and you will master your life.
“This is my spot!”, “Bazinga!”, are you familiar with those expressions?
As humans, we love to tie things together in one united theory: this is what the big bang theory is trying to accomplish.
Sheldon is the science genius in TBBT (The Big Bang Theory), no doubt about it.
He can explain all the forces in the universe. Yet the fifth force is beyond his grip. It is that force that is propelling him forward.
Before talking about the 5th force, let me introduce the four forces in question very briefly:
- Strong force
- Weak force
GRAVITY — the force of gravity is the most common and well-known force from the masses.
Yes, pun intended.
Gravity is the force holding us on Earth, holding Earth on its trajectory around the sun, keeping the sun in the Milky Way, our galaxy.
Gravity is simple to grasp. It is the force grounding us on Earth when we think that we are so powerful that it cannot apply to us.
ELECTROMAGNETISM — This is the force that also can be experienced quite easily. This force is the force that attracts or repulse two magnets depending on their polarity.
The electromagnetic force is the source of electricity, light, and also chemistry.
Yes, from the proteins in our body to the selfie we post on Instagram, we have to thank electromagnetism.
WEAK FORCE — This force is responsible for the decays of protons and neutrons within the nucleus of an atom.
My knowledge of this force is weak. Yes, I did it again. Pun intended!
Put simply: this force is why nuclear waste can take centuries to stop being radioactive.
And to paraphrase Britney Spears, the weak force can be toxic.
Let’s come back to Sheldon of TBBT and the force that is propelling him forward.
There is no doubt that the four forces listed above apply to us as humans.
Yet, we are more than just our physical beings.
We are also our mental beings, evolving in the same universe.
What is that fifth force applying to our mental being?
Friction is the fifth force.
Before going into details, let’s understand the physics behind this force.
FRICTION, THE FIFTH FORCE — Friction is the force of resistance in the motion of physical objects.
Are you trying to push a box sitting in the ground? Friction.
Are you trying to swim against a strong stream? Friction.
But not the same kind of friction as in the examples above.
There are only 10 types of friction. This is a binary joke.
Static friction — This type of friction is the resistance against the initial movement of an object.
Like when you are trying to move a heavy object in your office…I mean your home office.
Static friction opposes any initial movement.
Kinetic friction — This type of friction is the resistance of an object in motion.
It is the case of a flying aircraft pushing against air resistance.
Kinetic friction applies to any movement of two objects in contact.
Friction is the force that is holding us back in two ways when it comes to our life.
It is the most potent force in our universe because it directly applies to our minds.
When we are afraid to take a leap of faith to our next big project, static friction is being applied to our minds.
When we find the courage to start quitting a bad habit, we have conquered static friction.
Yet all along the way, kinetic friction is the wind around us, trying to hold us back.
Like all other four forces, the power of friction is present every day of our life.
Often we cannot overcome what we can not see.
So we have to be aware of its presence and its power.
We have to find ways to minimize or eradicate the effects of friction in our lives.
We have to learn from others, our mentors, our communities, our elders and share the tips we have acquired during our lives.
The one quote that resonates with me is this one:
“Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
― Bruce Lee
In my life, I am always seeking the path of least resistance.
Not to be confused with the easiest path.
Because the easiest way often becomes, in the long run, the path of most resistance.
Like a car in motion, I always strive to use friction to propel me forward.
How do you deal with friction?
What tips and tricks do you use to move forward?
Did I miss a sixth force?
